Pacific Consultants Take Home The ACENZ Silver Order of Merit
At the 2007 ACENZ awards ceremony, Pacific Consultants won the prestigious Silver Order of Merit for the Park Road campus, in Miramar, Wellington, which is the largest and most up-to-date cinema postproduction facility of its type in the world.
Pacific Consultants was responsible for the design and documentation, and construction monitoring of all the mechanical, fire protection, electrical, communications and security services.
The Park Road facility contains over 100 dedicated function spaces, including three sound mixing theatre suites, sound effect suites, a film processing laboratory and a digital theatre. There are also digital and telelcine suites, edit rooms and development facilities, as well as client support and administration areas.
Pacific Consultants’ brief included exacting performance criteria including strict sound, temperature, humidity and pressure controls because of the need to protect sensitive audio-visual equipment. The building requires substantial and reliable energy supplies.
Pacific Consultants had to work within a very restrictive timeframe, because the project was staged and fast-tracked to facilitate the final mixing of “The Lord of the Rings’. The building was a key to the success of “The Lord of the Rings” and “King Kong”, and its users are full of praise for its performance.
Upper Hutt H20 Xtreme
The Upper Hutt pool complex, H2O Xtream, was originally designed to incorporate a co-generation plant. With changes in gas tariff structures over recent times, this system has not been economic to run. Pacific Consultants were therefore commissioned to undertake a series of energy studies to consider and develop options for improving the overall energy efficiency of the complex. As a result of these studies we were commissioned to design a heat pump system to recover heat from the pool hall exhaust air and then heat up the new fresh air makeup and the pool water. We also designed a power factor control system. These systems have just recently been commissioned and are now running. Other projects undertaken by Pacific Consultants at the complex include; developing a Planned Preventative Maintenance System for the mechanical, electrical and pool water systems and the installation of a new hydroslide.

Southampton Road Studios
This new ~2,300m2 facility is being constructed for Camperdown Studios Limited, in Mirimar, Wellington. The facility comprises one large sound recording stage. Working directly for Camperdown Studios, and in conjunction with the in-house design team, Pacific Consultants are responsible for the design and documentation of all of the mechanical and electrical services for this project which include mechanical, fire protection, electrical, communications, data, and security services.
Horowhenua Health Centre
The Horowhenua Health Centre replaces the existing Levin Hospital and is on the same site. The facility comprises a treatment area, ward area, maternity area, X-ray facility, general practitioner clinic, consultant clinic, pharmacy, physiotherapy and administration areas.
The first installation of its kind in New Zealand
In the drive for energy efficiency in thermal comfort applications, Pacific Consultants have been successfully involved in the design and implementation of large diameter roof-slung fans for the purpose of creating air movement within a 7000 sq. metre Bunnings hardware store in Whangarei. The 5 fans installed range between 3.2 to 5.5 metres in diameter and consume a fraction of the power required by ordinary air conditioning systems. Hailed as a major improvement to the store’s internal environment in summer, no doubt we will be seeing more stores following suit. The second installation of its kind is Bendon’s storage warehouse in Auckland where two 7 metre fans have been installed and are due to be commissioned in the very near future.
Victoria University Server Room
Located at Victoria University's Wellington Campus, this new ~240m2 facility was designed to consolidate all of the University's Network and Schools-based computing systems currently under one roof. What made this job unusual was the fact that the new room was built around the existing, and operating, server room. Pacific Consultants were responsible for the investigation, design and documentation of all of the mechanical, electrical, fire safety and fire protection services for this project, which included; Generator/UPS power, Process coolers, gas flooding, lighting, and security. Since the original server room expansion, the load requirement of the room has expanded again, resulting in the design, documentation, project management and implementation of a further UPS power and cooling capacity. Again, the server room expansion was performed around a live server room!
